Overseas variations/Variations outremer by Rémy Romain

This picture requires a certain breath to extend perception. An immense flood of images and materials compels us to distance ourselves. We establish our aesthetic regime elsewhere, but in an otherwise rootless, anchorless, reassuring beacon. Silkscreen, random repetition of tasks and marks, the fabric unceasingly weaves a continuous thread that never ends. Here the substance is almost too rich, clusters of colors with infinite variations conjugate blue in all its forms. It flows, it overflows constantly. Sometimes the painting becomes denser, closer to filling and sometimes conversely it leaves room for opening and evaporation. The liquid gives place to the gaseous and the impermanent. But the image has a perfect coherence, it is an infinity of cubes that contain this spreading. Cubes pressed together like ice cubes, which wait and contain serenely the painter’s fury. Painting is not a single casting, on the contrary it quantifies its outbursts, its oceanic bursts. As an event that would burst on the surface, the effects of which would extend farther and farther.

Is it necessary to interpret this repetition? Can we assign a function to the pictorial gestus? Not sure, one thing is certain however the canvas is a witness to a human event, perhaps too human. If one penetrates into these boxes which gain each time in depth, one will perceive that forms try to incarnate, maybe a narrative could appear. Footprints, body pieces, silhouettes emerge behind the casting of paint. It does not flow for nothing. As if painting became, in memory of Klein, again anthropometric. But here there is no need for an external staging,  it is from the intimate of the canvas that the convulsion is born. The pictorial matter rises to expres the cry of man.
